Recommended Tree/Plant List
Click HERE for a downloadable document of native trees, shrubs, bulbs, and groundcovers appropriate for our environment and that should work well with Surfside's Height requirements. This list was developed with input from licensed arborists, local WSU Master Gardeners, and local residents.
The Environment
We believe in scientifically supported facts, not hysteria. Concern for the environment is core to protecting the unique Surfside ecosystem and why "Preservation" is part of our name. A Surfside Preservation supporter submitted a detailed document of environmental facts and information. Tree Heights
Surfside United proponents and recommended candidates frequently state that instead of members complying with their legal obligation and agreement to abide by the covenants, the solution is to increase tree heights to 24 feet or implement a line of sight solution. Both of these are flawed. A member submitted the following post HERE regarding why increasing heights to 24 feet is a losing alternative. The line of sight solution, with claimed origins from the Piper himself, Patrick Johansen, and championed by Trustee candidate Steve Wallace is also a non starter. It defines a view as only of the ocean and only from J Place. It is presumptuous to assume an ocean view from J Place is the only view members enjoy and want to protect. The line of sight proposal does not "protect" views. It requires impacted members to "complain", pitting neighbors against each other, and requires a certified arborist to do the work while shifting the financial responsibility to the complainant . This is the exact opposite of what has been agreed and in place since the original incorporation of Surfside and typical of the "solutions" Surfside United feels best for members.
