SHOA Ad Hoc Committee
The Ad Hoc committee was formed October 2021. Any member in good standing was invited to join the committee and was able to join up until the final few meetings. The purpose of the Ad Hoc Committee, as advised in the Charter, was to address key areas identified from the October 2, 2021 Information Gathering workshop (also open to all members) inlcuding seasonal flooding, view protection, tree height covenant restrictions, increasing wildfire hazards, water table fluctuations, king tides and the costs related to addressing these issues. The outcome of the Ad Hoc committee, through democratic process ensured by neutral facilitator, was three proposals presented to the board. The board will consider each proposal and determine if any should be presented to the membership at the July annual meeting. The proposals include a Surfside Vegetation Management Plan, a proposed Tree Height Variance process, and a proposed covenant change reinserting view language in our covenants to clarify and supplement the existing building and vegetation height restrictions. A summary of those proposals is provided in the link below. The final proposals will be added after final board approval.
It is worth noting that although participation in the Ad Hoc committee was inclusive to all members and openly and frequently promoted, Surfside United immediately used their favorite boogeyman, The Faction, to claim that the committee was unfairly stacked instead of recognizing that perhaps their opinions and positions don't represent the majority of SHOA members. The Surfside United Ad Hoc committee members, including committee co-chairs and Trustee candidates Candace Carteen and Steve Wallace and Trustee candidate Sally Brown, were often disruptive and rude and not respectful of majority decisions. This included disruptions to committee speakers from Trustee candidate Sally Brown by standing up and holding an inappropriate sign (we don't believe this reflects the level of professionalism desired from a potential Trustee). Despite agreement to work together and contrary to direction to be respectful of all committee members and opinions, this group immediately took to social media to badmouth committee efforts and personally insult committee members whose opinion they didn't agree with. These behaviors led to a two week pause in meetings to ensure the restoration of civility needed for the committee to complete its charter.
